Viaducts in Sri Lanka: Beyond the Nine Arches Bridge
When discussing viaducts in Sri Lanka, the Nine Arches Bridge between Ella and Demodara frequently comes to mind. This iconic structure has sparked recent controversy regarding its true creator. While history credits Appuhamy, an engineer, he was, in fact, the contractor who provided labor to Harold Marwood, the British engineer responsible for its design and construction.
However, there are other significant viaducts in Sri Lanka, each unique in scale and engineering marvel. One such example is the Ambathenna Bridge, famously known as “Ahas Bokkuwa,” located near Athweltota on the Thiruwanaketiya-Agalawatta highway.
Ahas Bokkuwa: The Largest Culvert Viaduct in Sri Lanka
It is referred to as the largest culvert viaduct in Sri Lanka. During World War II, British rulers constructed this viaduct with the help of African soldiers. In the vicinity of 2016, the highway was developed, and only minor renovations were made to the sides of the viaduct. The viaduct, approximately 25 feet high, spans over the Kabaragoidola Stream. Nearby the bridge, you can find the enchanting Kabaragovidola Ella waterfall.
